EVs Stole the Show at the 2023 Washington, D.C. Auto Show

The Washington, D.C. Auto Show indeed set a high bar for subsequent auto shows in 2023. It was a grand spectacle of innovative design, cutting-edge technology, and promising eco-friendly initiatives. Manufacturers, with the support of local dealers, brought their latest models to be marveled at by auto enthusiasts, industry insiders, and the general public. Among the most striking displays were those from exotic manufacturers, who seized the opportunity during the Public Policy Day to unveil their latest models in a grand reveal. This gesture not only wowed attendees but also underlined their commitment to innovative design and performance. The success of this show signals a bright and promising year for the auto industry.

“Ecstatic,” said John O’Donnell, President and CEO of the Washington, D.C. Auto Show. “That is how we feel. Ecstatic to see lines of guests wrapped around the outside of the Convention Center just waiting to come in. Ecstatic to hear the great return of investment our exhibitors experienced. Ecstatic to see what is to come within the industry and the show.” “This year our hats go off to the exhibitors,” said John. “They filled their displays with their latest models, including prototypes of the newest additions to come; all while still recovering from a limited inventory”

The show’s management team and exhibitors were overjoyed with the surge in attendance figures. This impressive turnout resulted in numerous exhibitors not just meeting, but exceeding their lead generation goals, with some even tripling their desired target. New features at the show, like the Outdoor Pavilion, offered a welcome diversion from the main event. It hosted family-friendly experiences such as CitySwing’s Golf Truck, which proved to be a delightful break from mobility browsing for attendees of all ages. ElectriCity Bikes also captivated crowds, offering an exhilarating two-wheel riding experience with nearly 60 different trim models on display.

In spite of the outdoor attractions, the indoor and outdoor Ride N’ Drives from Hyundai, Toyota, and Pepco EVsmart maintained their appeal, generating nearly 10,000 total rides throughout the event. The Art-of-Motion section, presented by Automotive Rhythms, captivated visitors with their display of custom rides, live art showcases, and a selection of exotic favorites from local garages. Notably, the newest mobility exhibitor, VonMercier Hovercraft, sealed a strategic partnership agreement with Aeroauto Aeromalls, a leading provider of advanced personal transportation solutions, during the course of the show. This agreement underscores the extent of business opportunities and partnerships that such events can foster.

“The Washington, D.C. Auto Show is always an amazing opportunity to experience multiple brands in person under one roof with zero sales pressure,” said Laura Voss, Toyota Display Supervisor. “Particularly during this time when the automotive industry is facing new challenges, the auto show provides a unique opportunity to get hands on with products and to also potentially experience vehicles on the road through opportunities like Toyota’s Drive Center. It truly is a fun event for all ages! We are very proud of all we have going on in and out of the show!”

The focus of attendees was predominantly towards electric and hybrid vehicles, aligning seamlessly with this year’s Public Policy Day theme on the electric vehicle market. In fact, Public Policy Day saw record-breaking attendance with over 500 members from the media, government officials, and auto industry representatives. Following the day’s sessions, the crowd swelled into the thousands for the much-anticipated Sneak Peek Preview held later that evening.

Prominent figures such as Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm, White House Climate Advisor Ali Zaidi, NHTSA Administrator Ann Carlson, Senator Tom Carper, Congresswoman Debbie Dingell, and more than 150 Hill and Federal Agency staffers convened on the show floor to discuss industry trends and future plans. Among the key discussions, the President’s economic plan took center stage.

Interestingly, the show had a direct impact on legislative matters, specifically influencing the classification of vehicles for EV tax credits under the Inflation Reduction Act. This development underscores the show’s role as a significant platform for policy discussions and industry advancements.
