Driving electric vehicle adoption

Skycharger to Develop Major EV Fast Charging Hub at San Francisco International Airport

Skycharger, a leading developer of electric vehicle charging infrastructure, made an important announcement on June 24, 2025. The company said that it has been awarded a lease to build a state-of-the-art fast charging hub at San Francisco International Airport (SFO). This exciting project was unanimously approved by the San Francisco Board of Supervisors on June 10, following an earlier unanimous green light from the SFO Airport Commission in April. Skycharger’s EV Hub is set to serve electric rideshare vehicles like Uber and Lyft, as well as EV-driving airport customers and the general public, supporting SFO’s commitment to sustainability and its goal of achieving zero net carbon operations.

Skycharger’s new facility is designed to meet growing demand driven by California’s Clean Miles Standard, which requires 90% of rideshare miles to be electric by 2030. The EV Hub is expected to help avoid more than 200,000 tons of CO2 equivalent over its first decade of operation—an impressive contribution to regional emissions reductions. Partnering with engineering firm Burns & McDonnell, Skycharger will deploy high-capacity, 400 kW charging ports that significantly reduce dwell times and prepare the site for future high-power vehicles, including larger EVs with bigger battery packs. In addition to rapid charging, the hub will also feature a convenience store to enhance the driver experience.

“We are grateful to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors and the SFO Airport Commission for selecting Skycharger to build a state-of-the-art EV charging experience at the Airport,” said Andy Karetsky, CEO of Skycharger. “Skycharger’s EV Hub will be a next-generation facility that reflects the steadfast, bold leadership of SFO, San Francisco, and California in clean transportation technologies.”

To ensure top-tier reliability and flexibility, Skycharger has chosen Kempower to provide the charging hardware for the project. Kempower will supply 12 Power Cabinets and 24 Satellite dispensers, offering dynamic power distribution to meet variable demand efficiently.

“We’re moving quickly to bring this hub online,” said Johannes Copeland, COO of Skycharger. “Kempower’s flexible, high-performance charging technology is the right fit for this mission-critical deployment at one of the busiest airports in the country.”

This SFO project builds on Skycharger’s momentum, following a $10 million grant from the California Energy Commission to create two electric truck stops along I-5 in Southern California, and the company’s selection to develop a 70-port electric truck charging hub at the Port of San Diego, complete with solar power and battery storage. Founded in 2013, Skycharger is a subsidiary of Skyview Ventures and operates hubs for light, medium, and heavy-duty vehicles across seven states.

Skycharger’s network includes the West Coast Highway Corridor (WCHC) DC Fast Charging Network at highway exits throughout California, which ranks as the fourth largest DC fast charging network in the state. Recently, Skycharger launched its first dedicated fleet charging hub for medium- and heavy-duty trucks, already supporting over 100 trucks from that facility.
