Driving electric vehicle adoption

Colorado Awards $5M in Grants to Expand EV Charging

The Colorado Energy Office (CEO) has awarded $5 million in state-funded grants to expand the state’s electric vehicle (EV) charging network with 56 new fast charger ports at nine locations. Announced on August 8, 2025, the investment comes as part of the Direct-Current Fast-Charging (DCFC) Plazas program, which has now completed its seventh round of awards.

This round will grow Colorado’s public fast-charger network, currently more than 1,400 ports, by roughly 4%. Projects were prioritized in disproportionately impacted communities to improve air quality and provide clean transportation access where it’s needed most. Locations selected for new installations include Fairplay, Ridgway, Mancos, Commerce City, Denver, Woodland Park, Naturita, and Glendale. Many chargers are expected to be operational in 2026 and 2027.

Forward-thinking Governor Jared Polis emphasized that the investment will make EVs more accessible and affordable for residents and visitors, and criticized federal policies he said slow the market-driven transition to electric vehicles. He reaffirmed Colorado’s commitment to supporting 940,000 light-duty EVs on the road by 2030, noting the benefits of lower operating costs and cleaner air.

CEO Executive Director Will Toor underscored that the shift to EVs supports the state’s greenhouse gas reduction goals while delivering economic and public health benefits. With federal funding currently on hold, this round is fully supported by state dollars.

Since its launch, the DCFC Plazas program has completed 13 sites across the Front Range, Eastern Plains, and Western Slope, including Montrose, Frisco, Pueblo, Cortez, Longmont, Seibert, and Limon. More details are available on the program’s DCFC Plazas webpage.

Helios Charging Inc., one of the grant recipients, is a U.S.-based company dedicated to building America’s electric vehicle infrastructure through the deployment of direct-current fast chargers (DCFC). The company offers a full-service solution, from consultation and installation to ongoing operation and maintenance, often installing chargers at no upfront cost to host locations, which simply need to provide electricity and an electrical connection.

EVinfo.net’s Take: Forward-Thinking States Like Colorado are Moving America in the Right Direction

Forward-thinking states like New York, California, and Colorado are actively advancing electric vehicle (EV) adoption and expanding EV charging infrastructure through targeted investments, innovative policies, and supportive grant programs. These states recognize the critical role that clean transportation plays in reducing emissions, improving public health, and driving economic growth.

In contrast, the federal government has faced criticism for inconsistent policies and delays that have hindered the momentum of EV technology deployment. While federal actions have slowed progress in 2025, proactive state initiatives continue to pave the way toward a more sustainable and electrified transportation future.
