New Chevy Bolt EV Estimated to Charge Over Twice as Fast as Previous Models

On December 25, 2025, EV Charging Stations, Brought to you by State of Charge, reported that the new, exciting, upcoming 2027 Chevrolet Bolt will be able to charge more than twice as fast as previous Bolt models, based on their studies.

The team reported: “The car can replenish over 178 miles of range in 26 minutes at an average of 6.9 miles/minute. That’s over twice as fast as the old Bolt EV/Bolt EUV.”

The Exciting New 2027 Chevrolet Bolt is Coming Soon

The greatly anticipated all-new 2027 Chevrolet Bolt is nearing its return. Production began in November, with the first vehicles expected to arrive at dealerships in January 2026. The next-generation Bolt is positioned as a more affordable entry-level EV, starting below $30,000, while delivering major improvements in DC fast-charging performance and adopting a North American Charging Standard (SAE J3400) port.

The original Chevrolet Bolt EV debuted in the U.S. market in late 2016 for the 2017 model year. A slightly larger Bolt EUV followed in 2022, but both models were discontinued after the 2023 model year. Between Q4 2016 and Q3 2025, Chevrolet sold 212,810 Bolt EV and EUV models in the United States, making the Bolt lineup General Motors’ best-selling all-electric vehicles outside of China. Despite its success, the Bolt’s charging performance lagged behind newer EVs. Equipped with a CCS1 port, the Bolt EV topped out at 55 kW of DC fast-charging power.

Early 2017–2019 Bolt EV models, with a 60 kWh battery and 238 miles of EPA range, added about 90 miles of range in 30 minutes. Later 2020–2023 Bolt EVs improved slightly, adding up to 100 miles in the same time, while the Bolt EUV added about 95 miles in 30 minutes. In real-world testing, a 10 to 80 percent charge could take more than 70 minutes, highlighting the model’s slow charging curve.

The 2027 Chevrolet Bolt represents a dramatic leap forward. It retains a 65 kWh battery, now using LFP chemistry, and is expected to deliver up to 255 miles of EPA range. Charging power increases to as much as 150 kW, enabling a 10 to 80 percent charge in approximately 26 minutes. In that time, the new Bolt can add more than 178 miles of range, more than twice the rate of the previous generation.

With a launch model starting MSRP of $29,990, including the $1,395 destination freight charge, the 2027 Chevrolet Bolt LT delivers the affordable American electric vehicle many buyers have been waiting for. Later in the model year, Chevrolet will introduce an even lower-priced LT variant with a starting MSRP of $28,995, also including the $1,395 destination charge.

“The Chevrolet Bolt was the industry’s first affordable mass-market, long-range EV and it commanded one of GM’s most loyal customer bases thanks to its price, versatility and practicality,” said Scott Bell, vice president, Global Chevrolet.

“After production ended, we heard our customer’s feedback and their love for this product. So the Bolt is coming back—by popular demand and better than ever—for a limited time. This is a celebration of what Bolt means to our customers and to Chevrolet. It’s your chance to own a popular EV that’s affordable. So, if you’ve been waiting, this is the moment. Don’t miss it,” Bell said.

The Bolt is expected to offer the longest driving range of any electric vehicle priced under $30,000. Customer deliveries are scheduled to begin early next year, with production limited during the initial rollout. The Bolt will join the Chevrolet Equinox EV, currently one of the best-selling electric vehicles on the market, reinforcing Chevrolet’s leadership in the affordable EV segment. Together, the Bolt and Equinox EV are projected to make up the majority of Chevrolet’s EV sales volume for the 2026 model year.
