BYD Upgrading Its Top Selling EVs With 5 Minute Flash Charging

BYD is rapidly expanding deployment of its new Flash Charging technology, bringing ultra-fast charging capabilities from high-end luxury vehicles into mainstream EV models.

The company first introduced its next-generation Blade Battery 2.0 and Flash Charging system earlier this year, initially confirming that the ultra-luxury Yangwang U7 sedan would debut the technology. Since then, BYD has expanded the rollout to additional premium models, including the new Denza Z9 GT, which also became the first overseas model equipped with the system.

Last week, BYD officially opened European orders for the Denza Z9 GT with pricing starting around €115,000 ($134,500). BYD Executive Vice President Stella Li described the model as the ideal vehicle to introduce the company’s “Ready in 5, Full in 9, Cold Add 3” charging philosophy to global markets.

BYD’s Flash Charging platform supports charging speeds of up to 1,500 kW, allowing compatible vehicles to recharge from 10% to 70% in approximately five minutes. A charge from 10% to 97% takes about nine minutes, while charging in extreme cold conditions at -30°C extends that time by only about three additional minutes.

Now BYD is moving the technology into one of its highest-volume EVs, the Yuan Plus, sold internationally as the Atto 3.

The third-generation Yuan Plus was unveiled at the Beijing Auto Show on April 24 and features the company’s new Blade Battery technology alongside Flash Charging capability. The electric crossover will be offered with two battery options, a 57.5 kWh pack rated for 540 km (335 miles) of CLTC range and a larger 68.5 kWh pack rated for 630 km (391 miles).

The updated model also receives a larger body, upgraded rear electric motors producing either 268 hp or 322 hp, and a redesigned interior with a 15.6-inch floating infotainment screen, premium seating, and a built-in refrigerator.

Every version of the new Yuan Plus will include BYD’s God’s Eye C advanced driver assistance system, featuring technologies such as high-speed tire blowout stability control. Higher-end trims will also offer roof-mounted LiDAR.

According to data compiled by CleanTechnica, the Yuan Plus ranked as the world’s 13th best-selling EV in 2025 with more than 223,000 units sold globally.

BYD appears to be using faster charging, longer range, and upgraded technology features to strengthen its position as competition intensifies in China’s rapidly evolving EV market. A local dealership source indicated the upgraded Yuan Plus with Flash Charging could officially launch on May 21 with expected starting prices around 120,000 yuan ($17,700).

The Yuan Plus is not the only volume EV receiving the upgrade. BYD’s Song Ultra EV with Flash Charging reportedly secured more than 60,000 pre-orders within its first month on the market, highlighting growing consumer interest in ultra-fast charging technology as a major EV selling point.
