Driving electric vehicle adoption

Amazon Places Its Largest-Ever Order of Electric Heavy Trucks, Over 200 MB eActros 600’s

On January 14, 2025, Amazon reported that it placed its largest-ever order of electric heavy trucks. Mercedes-Benz Trucks is set to supply Amazon with more than 200 new eActros 600 electric heavy goods vehicles (eHGVs). These vehicles will become part of Amazon’s existing eHGV transportation network starting later this year, supporting the company’s commitment under The Climate Pledge to achieve net-zero carbon emissions across its operations by 2040.

The order is a key component of Amazon’s strategy to reduce carbon emissions in its transportation network, which includes enhancing route efficiency, scaling the use of zero-emission and alternative fuel vehicles, and collaborating with industry and governments to accelerate the development of charging infrastructure.

The eActros 600 trucks will be deployed across high-mileage routes within Amazon’s middle-mile network in the UK and Germany, transporting trailers to and from fulfillment centers, sort centers, and delivery stations. Together, these zero-exhaust emission vehicles are expected to transport over 350 million packages annually once fully operational.

The deployment of heavy vehicle charging infrastructure is essential for scaling the use of electric heavy goods vehicles in Europe. This presents challenges related to the distance vehicles must travel, their charging speed, and the availability of suitable power sources. To address this, Amazon plans to install 360kW electric charging points at key sites, enabling the trucks to charge from 20% to 80% in just over an hour. Additionally, Amazon will collaborate with various stakeholders to facilitate the installation of external charging points in strategic locations to support longer journeys.

The eActros 600 is the flagship long-haul electric truck from Mercedes-Benz Trucks. It features an installed battery capacity of over 600 kilowatt-hours, providing a range of 500 kilometers on a single charge. Production of the eActros 600 began recently at Mercedes-Benz Trucks’ plant in Wörth, Germany. This vehicle is designed to meet the growing demand for sustainable transportation solutions, offering a powerful and efficient option for long-haul logistics.

Andreas Marschner, Vice President of Amazon Worldwide Operations Sustainability, said: “This order of more than 200 electric trucks underlines our commitment to being a leader in electrifying heavy goods transportation in Europe. It is the biggest electric heavy truck order by Amazon to date anywhere in the world, and is an important step as we work to achieve our Climate Pledge commitment to reach net-zero carbon emissions across our operations by 2040. We look forward to sharing our learnings, and will continue to collaborate with stakeholders to support the transition to more electric heavy goods vehicles on European roads, and so more efficient and lower-emission deliveries for Amazon’s customers.”

In addition to eHGVs, Amazon and its delivery partners have more than 3,000 electric vans delivering packages to customers across Europe, and this number is expected to grow to more than 10,000 vehicles by the end of 2025. Read Amazon’s latest Sustainability Report here.
