Genesis GV60 Magma EV Concept Ushers in a New Performance Sub-Brand

Genesis used the recent New York Auto Show to announce Magma, a new performance-focused sub-brand, unveiling the electric GV60 Magma concept as its opening statement. A production version is expected soon and could be the first road-going Magma model to reach customers.

The GV60 Magma builds on the brand’s existing electric SUV, which shares its platform with the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6. Both of those siblings already have high-performance variants, the Ioniq 5 N and EV6 GT, and while Genesis has not confirmed specs for the Magma, the platform’s proven capability suggests serious output is on the way. Six-time Le Mans winner Jacky Ickx has joined as a brand partner and spoke positively after driving a version of the concept.

Visually, the GV60 Magma is aggressive and purposeful. Widened wheel arches with vented openings, a revised front bumper with a larger cooling intake, a rear diffuser, roof-mounted fins channeling air to a rear wing, and 21-inch aero-disc wheels all signal that this is not a styling exercise. Inside, bucket seats and nappa and suede leather with orange stitching complete the performance brief.

Genesis plans to extend the Magma lineup across its entire vehicle range, covering the G70, G80, and G90 sedans and the GV70 and GV80 crossovers alongside the GV60. The sub-brand positions Genesis as a serious player in the performance space, not just a luxury alternative.

The GV60 Magma Concept is fully electric, running a dual-motor AWD powertrain expected to produce upward of 640 horsepower, putting it in the same territory as the Ioniq 5 N. A dedicated Boost Mode will unlock peak output, while Drift Mode adds a performance driving dimension that signals Genesis is serious about the Magma subbrand delivering real driving engagement, not just aggressive styling.

Upgraded thermal management for the battery and motors, a stiffer suspension tune, and the aerodynamic additions seen on the concept all support that mission. Genesis has positioned the GV60 Magma as the hot SUV variant of its existing EV platform and a near-production preview of what the broader Magma lineup will deliver across its full vehicle range.

Genesis is the luxury vehicle brand of Hyundai Motor Group, launched as a standalone marque in 2015 after operating as a premium trim line within Hyundai for years prior. Headquartered in South Korea, it competes directly with established luxury names like BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Lexus, differentiating itself through a value-forward approach that offers comparable features and performance at lower price points.

The lineup spans sedans, SUVs, and electric vehicles, including the G70, G80, and G90 sedans alongside the GV70 and GV80 crossovers and the GV60 electric SUV. The brand has earned consistent praise from critics for interior quality, design, and warranty coverage, which ranks among the best in the industry.

Genesis has leaned heavily into electrification in recent years, with the GV60 built on Hyundai Motor Group’s dedicated E-GMP electric platform shared with the Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6. The Magma performance subbrand represents the next phase of that strategy, bringing high-output variants to market and pushing Genesis further into territory traditionally owned by European performance luxury brands.
