HEVO, ORNL and BMW Advance Wireless EV Charging Technology, As Porsche Rolls it Out
On September 21, 2026, HEVO Inc., a New York-based developer and Tier 1 supplier of patented Rezonant™ wireless charging hardware and the Journey™ software platform, announced its participation in a technology evaluation program with Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and BMW focused on advancing next-generation wireless charging technology.
HEVO is contributing wireless charging expertise, engineering support and circular coil topologies to support BMW bench testing evaluating compatibility with ORNL’s proprietary polyphase coil technology.
Industry interest in polyphase wireless charging has grown because of its potential to increase power density and efficiency while improving packaging for future electric and autonomous vehicle applications. ORNL and BMW have publicly demonstrated advances in polyphase wireless charging systems, highlighting the technology’s potential for next-generation mobility platforms.
“Wireless charging will be a foundational technology for the future of electric and autonomous transportation,” said Jeremy McCool, Founder and CEO of HEVO. “As an ORNL technology licensee, HEVO is pleased to support the continued evaluation of circular and polyphase wireless charging systems through technical analysis. We believe innovations that improve performance, efficiency and scalability can help accelerate the adoption of autonomous mobility, automated fleet operations and next-generation charging infrastructure.”
McCool said HEVO’s objective is to contribute practical experience from commercial wireless charging deployments while helping evaluate technologies that could support future electric vehicle ecosystems. The company will work alongside industry and research organizations as the evaluation progresses.
The testing builds on ORNL and BMW efforts to explore advanced wireless charging architectures capable of supporting future electric mobility platforms. HEVO said wireless charging could become increasingly important for automated vehicle operations, improved fleet utilization and the continued development of electric transportation systems.

Porsche Introduces Wireless Charging for Electric Vehicles
Porsche introduced wireless charging for its electric vehicles, describing the technology as a particularly convenient way to charge that could simplify everyday EV ownership. The system was included in a recent Porsche announcement about updates to the Cayenne Electric, where the automaker detailed a charging system that allows drivers to simply park their vehicle over a ground pad to begin charging.
Wireless, or inductive, charging eliminates the need to physically connect a charging cable to the vehicle. The technology could create new possibilities for EV charging in residential, commercial and fleet applications, including locations where installing conventional charging equipment or accessing a driveway or garage is difficult.
Porsche’s Wireless Charging system can deliver up to 11 kilowatts (kW) of power with an efficiency of approximately 90%. The system consists of three main components: the required hardware installed on the Porsche Cayenne, a vehicle-side charging pad and a ground pad installed in the parking space. The ground pad is weatherproof and can be installed outdoors.
Safety features include motion sensors and foreign object detection. The system is designed to automatically stop charging if a person or animal approaches the vehicle or ground pad. It also shuts down if a metallic object is detected on the ground pad that could become hot during charging.
The Wireless Charging system is currently available to order in Germany and other European markets. Porsche plans to introduce the technology in additional markets in stages worldwide wherever Porsche Connect is available.
The introduction adds another option to the growing range of EV charging technologies as automakers and charging companies work to make charging more convenient and increasingly compatible with automated vehicle operation.
