Mercedes’ New Futuristic EV Show Car Is Inspired by the 1930s
Mercedes-Benz has entered a bold new era of design with the recent reveal of its latest electric show car, the Vision Iconic, at Shanghai Fashion Week. The Vision Iconic represents more than just a vehicle; it’s a statement of creative freedom that bridges Mercedes-Benz’s storied past with its electric future.
At the center of this evolution is a reimagined version of one of the most recognizable features in automotive history: the Mercedes-Benz radiator grille. First seen on the all-electric GLC, this new interpretation blends emotion and intelligence to create a signature look that stands out in a world of uniformity. Inspired by classic models like the W 108, W 111, and the legendary 600 Pullman, the Vision Iconic’s grille features a wide chrome frame, smoked-glass lattice structure, and integrated lighting that bring heritage into harmony with digital modernity.
“Vision Iconic embodies our vision for the future of mobility. With groundbreaking innovations such as neuromorphic computing, steer-by-wire, solar paint and Level 4 highly automated driving, along with state-of-the-art technology, we are setting new standards for the electric and digital age. This beautiful vehicle is a testament to our commitment to making the mobility of tomorrow a reality today,” said
Markus Schäfer, Member of the Board of Management of Mercedes‑Benz Group AG,
Chief Technology Officer, Development & Procurement.

“Inspired by the golden era of automotive design of the 1930s, this show car embodies the pure essence of Mercedes-Benz. With its hood giving it a majestic presence, sculptural flowing lines and a touch of Art Deco, it rises to become a true icon of automotive beauty. The interior with its continuous bench seat and the elegant rear, evoking memories of the legendary 300 SL. Our Vision Iconic is more than just an automobile – it is a sculpture in motion, an homage to timeless elegance and a statement for the future. The symbiosis of traditional craftsmanship, state-of-the-art technology and an unmistakable design language makes it the ultimate expression of value, prestige and grace:
the most beautiful, most prestigious kind of thing,” said Gorden Wagener, Chief Design Officer Mercedes-Benz Group AG.
The show car further elevates design through illumination. The standing Mercedes star glows proudly above the chrome grille, while pixel graphics and animated lighting add an emotional dimension to the vehicle’s digital character. Slim, confident headlights and a deep black high-gloss finish complete the striking exterior.
Inside, the Vision Iconic ushers in a new era of hyper-analog and digital luxury. The cabin takes cues from Art Deco design, combining opulent materials like deep blue velvet, polished brass, and mother-of-pearl trim with futuristic technology. A sculptural “Zeppelin” glass structure anchors the dashboard, housing analog instruments that awaken with cinematic precision. Even the four-spoke steering wheel is a piece of art, with a floating Mercedes logo suspended like a jewel inside a glass sphere.
Beyond its design, Vision Iconic showcases innovative technology aimed at shaping the future of electric mobility. Mercedes-Benz is exploring solar coatings that could generate up to 7,450 miles of additional range per year by capturing sunlight across the vehicle’s surface. The company is also developing neuromorphic computing, a new AI approach inspired by the human brain that could make automated driving up to 10 times more efficient while using 90 percent less energy.
As a pioneer in assisted and automated driving, Mercedes-Benz envisions Vision Iconic equipped with Level 4 automation, allowing drivers to fully relax as the car handles highway travel and parking autonomously. A steer-by-wire system, combined with rear-axle steering, enhances maneuverability while opening new possibilities for interior comfort and layout.
The debut also includes a Vision Iconic capsule fashion collection, featuring six handcrafted looks that mirror the car’s blue and silver-gold color palette and celebrate the glamour of Art Deco design.
Accompanying this new design language is the ICONIC DESIGN Book, an exclusive publication by the Mercedes-Benz design team featuring interviews with CEO Ola Källenius and Chief Design Officer Gorden Wagener. The book explores the philosophy behind the “New Iconic Era,” showing how the brand continues to redefine luxury and innovation while staying true to its heritage.
With Vision Iconic, Mercedes-Benz doesn’t just preview the future of electric vehicles; it redefines what it means to be timeless.
