The Sony Afeela 1 Will Be the First Car to Offer an Integrated Digital License Plate
California legalized digital license plates in 2018, but automaker adoption has progressed in distinct phases. Ford became the first OEM to offer digital plates at the dealership level in late 2023, partnering with Reviver to sell the RPLATE® as an optional accessory on select models in Arizona, California, and Michigan. However, Sony Honda Mobility’s upcoming AFEELA 1 electric sedan is poised to set a new industry benchmark as the first production vehicle to offer fully integrated, factory-available digital license plates from launch. Afeela announced the news on December 11, 2025.
“Our collaboration with Reviver reflects SHMA’s commitment to seamlessly integrating smart, connected technologies into every part of the AFEELA experience. The RPLATE® brings new levels of personalization to our customers, enriching the experience from the moment they take delivery of their very own AFEELA 1,” said Shugo Yamaguchi, President and CEO, Sony Honda Mobility of America Inc.

The AFEELA 1, scheduled to arrive in late 2025 with first deliveries in 2026, will feature Reviver’s RPLATE® as an official factory option rather than an aftermarket add-on. This integration allows owners to control the plate through a dedicated smartphone app, enabling customization of fonts, background color (black or white), and optional taglines or hashtags, as well as displaying information such as registration status, mileage, and theft alerts. Updates occur automatically via Reviver’s connected platform, streamlining plate renewal and compliance.
Reviver serves as the technology provider for both Ford and Sony Honda Mobility, but the AFEELA partnership marks the first time the digital plate is designed into the vehicle ecosystem from the outset. While Sony Honda Mobility has not confirmed whether RPLATE® controls will be embedded into the AFEELA 1’s expansive, full-width interior display, the company says the collaboration underscores its commitment to seamlessly integrating smart, connected technologies across the entire ownership experience.

“We’re grateful for the opportunity to work with Sony Honda Mobility of America and be part of the AFEELA journey. Together, we’re helping drivers personalize and interact with their vehicles in new ways through smart design, connected experiences, and modern technology. We’re looking forward to collaborating on more innovation like this in the future,” said Andrew Iorgulescu, CEO, Reviver Inc.
A preproduction AFEELA 1, priced from $89,900, has been showcased in Las Vegas and will continue to appear at AFEELA Studios in California and on the CES 2026 show floor. The RPLATE® will be priced comparably to existing offerings, with installation included as part of the AFEELA accessory package. Sony Honda Mobility has indicated it will provide transparency around costs, service timelines, and ongoing support.

Best known as a long-running CES highlight since its debut in 2023, the AFEELA 1 combines advanced infotainment, a customizable exterior Media Bar with dynamic LED displays, and next-generation driver assistance features. While some critics view the digital plate as another high-tech flourish on an already technology-heavy vehicle with an estimated 300-mile EPA range, Sony positions the RPLATE® as a practical enhancement, blending personalization, convenience, and safety in line with AFEELA’s future-forward mobility philosophy.
