Stellantis to Invest Over $406M in Michigan Plants for EVs and Hybrids

On September 11, 2024, Stellantis announced a major investment in Michigan plants as part of its electric vehicle (EV) expansion, including $406 million across three facilities: the Sterling Heights Assembly Plant, Warren Truck Assembly, and the Dundee Engine Plant. This investment will support the production of the company’s first-ever electric pickup, the Ram 1500 REV, at the Sterling Heights facility. The plant will be the first in the U.S. to manufacture a fully electric vehicle for Stellantis, marking a significant milestone for the automaker.

The Ram 1500 REV is set to debut later this year and will be produced alongside traditional internal combustion engine models. Stellantis’ move reflects the growing shift toward EVs, as it aims to compete with rivals in the electric truck market like Ford and General Motors. This investment is part of Stellantis’ broader push to electrify its vehicle lineup and strengthen its foothold in the EV industry.

“Sterling Heights Assembly has performed an incredible transformation in record time and I want to thank our colleagues for this great achievement,” Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares said in a statement. Gearing up to build our first-ever Ram electric truck and the range-extended version in Michigan is a meaningful moment of pride for our teams.”

Stellantis is making significant investments in its Michigan plants as part of its transition to electric vehicle (EV) production. The company is allocating $235.5 million to the Sterling Heights Assembly Plant, where it will produce both the fully electric Ram 1500 REV and the range-extended 2025 Ram 1500 Ramcharger. During two down weeks, teams completed BEV-specific installations to prepare the plant for this shift in production.

Additionally, Stellantis is investing $97.6 million in the Warren Truck Assembly Plant to support the production of a future Jeep Wagoneer model. This underscores the company’s commitment to electrifying its iconic brands.

Lastly, $73 million will be directed toward retooling the Dundee Engine Plant. This facility will be adapted to assemble, weld, and test battery trays for the STLA frame architecture, as well as machine front and rear beams. Production at Dundee will begin in phases starting in 2024 and 2026, marking its role in Stellantis’ broader EV strategy.

These investments highlight Stellantis’ focus on expanding its EV lineup and infrastructure to remain competitive in the rapidly growing electric vehicle market.

In June 2024, Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares said that the company plans to offer a $25,000 all-electric Jeep vehicle in the U.S. “very soon.”
