Driving electric vehicle adoption

Motiv, Workhorse to Merge, Scaling Electric Medium-Duty Fleet Adoption

Workhorse Group, a pioneer in zero-emission commercial vehicles, and Motiv Electric Trucks, a leader in medium-duty electric trucks and buses, have entered into a definitive merger agreement to form a unified manufacturer focused on scaling medium-duty EV adoption across North America. The new entity will concentrate on Classes 4–6, a market segment worth an estimated $23 billion annually. The news was announced the week of August 18, 2025.

From an engineering perspective, the merger strategically combines two highly complementary portfolios. Workhorse brings proven Class 4 vehicle platforms and a well-established dealer network, while Motiv contributes purpose-built Class 4–6 truck and bus architectures with modular electric drive systems. Together, the companies will leverage Workhorse’s Union City, Indiana, facility, capable of producing up to 5,000 vehicles per year, as the cornerstone of their manufacturing operations.

Operational efficiencies are also at the heart of the partnership. The companies plan to standardize software, hardware, and electrical systems across product lines, including shared powertrain control strategies and modular components. These efforts are expected to simplify servicing, reduce downtime, and lower unit costs. With a combined track record of delivering vehicles to ten of the largest medium-duty fleets in North America, logging more than 17 million electric miles, the merged team will be well-positioned to refine drivetrain durability, battery management, and charging solutions for real-world duty cycles.

Financial restructuring efforts, including a $20 million sale-leaseback of Workhorse’s Indiana plant and an additional $20 million in new debt financing, provide the capital needed to meet demand from confirmed fleet orders. The combined engineering teams project at least $20 million in cost synergies by 2026 through shared R&D, streamlined facilities, and common component platforms.

Scott Griffith, currently CEO of Motiv, will lead the merged company. His immediate priorities include expanding medium-duty EV production capacity, reducing the total cost of ownership relative to internal combustion engine trucks, and accelerating fleet adoption nationwide.

This merger marks a pivotal step toward transforming the medium-duty transportation sector, bringing scale, efficiency, and proven technology together to advance the future of zero-emission logistics.

Motiv’s Argo: A New Era for Medium-Duty Electric Trucks

Motiv Electric Trucks has introduced the Argo Series, pictured above. It is a purpose-built Class 4–6 electric cab-chassis designed from the ground up to transform medium-duty fleet operations. Unlike many electric trucks that retrofit existing internal combustion platforms, Argo was engineered as an EV from day one, delivering the strength, efficiency, and versatility that fleet operators need as they transition to zero-emission transportation.

The Argo offers a powerful combination of range, payload capacity, and adaptability. With the ability to haul up to 14,000 pounds and travel 150 to 200 miles on a single charge, it is capable of handling demanding duty cycles while meeting the requirements of last-mile delivery, refrigerated transport, vocational applications, and even buses. A new battery system developed with Our Next Energy provides reliable performance and longevity, while its electric drive system—created with Nidec—delivers torque comparable to Class 8 diesel trucks on a more efficient 400-volt architecture.

Driver experience was central to the design of the Argo. The cab features exceptional visibility and ergonomics, with heated adjustable seating, easy entry and exit, and controls that are intuitive for operators of different sizes. Safety and comfort were prioritized, with large windshields, curb-side windows, and forward-facing entry that reduces injury risk during frequent stops. The cab itself is made of structural composites, which are lightweight, corrosion resistant, and thermally efficient, providing durability and lower maintenance needs over the life of the vehicle.

Motiv also introduced its sixth-generation Smart Hub architecture with the Argo, simplifying wiring, reducing components, and making service easier while improving uptime. Backed by insights from more than 2.8 million real-world electric miles, the Argo reflects years of feedback from fleets that demanded more reliability, better performance, and lower total cost of ownership compared to diesel.

With production set to begin in late 2024, the Argo positions Motiv to expand from a niche provider to a key player in a $20 billion medium-duty EV market. Built in the United States and eligible for federal tax credits, the Argo is well-timed to meet growing regulatory requirements and the surging demand for zero-emission fleet solutions. By uniting purpose-built design with practical fleet needs, Motiv’s Argo signals a turning point in the electrification of medium-duty transportation.
